A little while back I told you guys I love me some Auto Trader: (www.AutoTraader.com). I mean where else can you go and dream shop for every car there is (except Spyker and Bugatti what’s up with that)?
Ok, where was I. Yes… so I was thinking hmm… what’s the going price on a used boss little rocket called the 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black series? Since I had recently seen one in real life I wondered what they were going for.
But in my search things got a bit mixed up because I don’t know all the alphanumeric names that are out there. CL, SL, CLS I mean come on. In my search I happened upon this monster.
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series. Now me, I’ve read about this car, but for all of you who are not initiated it has: a 670 HP V12 motor. Yes, I know your laughing! Stop there’s more… 0-60 3.9 sec, top speed 200 MPH. Not bad right…
Ok, you stopped laughing now get ready to laugh again. The sticker is…
Drum roll….
$299,999.00 .. yes US dollars. Its obscene I know.
That’s a lot of flow!
I mean, come on. For that you can get a much much more exotic looking and exotic behaving vehicle. Besides all that its $100k more than the “standard” 2009 SL 65 AMG which has 604HP and stickers for $194,700.
Not to say that this limited edition black series SL isn’t dope. It looks fresh and mean. I mean as fresh and mean as you can get with a SL. Bulging lines, flared vents, F-22 raptor lines. I am sure this car kicks much ass on the road and track.
Lets see is it a super car?
Its super fast – 200mph yep that’s fast.
Super rare at that price I’m sure.
Super expensive- check. $300k that’s laughingly funny expensive
Super car… not sure.
It’s more of a project car gone crazy, more of a muscle car than super car. MB said lets get the biggest motor we can find and shoe horn it into our tiniest (realistic) package and call it bad ass. For better or for worse that’s the way it looks to me.
Now, truth is, in the fast car game it comes down to HP plain and simple. This car has it. Others don’t. So, if you wanna go fast and embarrass the super car next to you at the red light go ahead and buy one. But, if you want the other cool factors that go with a super car IE: looking cool and unique, getting the best valet spot outside of the restaurant / night club dejour, having the beautiful women you so desire flock to you when your door’s open (up or out), this car does not have that option on the check list.
I mean come on it looks like an SL with a body kit. Its one of those if you have to explain it then it never worked.
It may be faster and perhaps have better handling than other (more rare) super cars in the price range, but to the laymen it’s the Benz two-seater that his boss’ wife drives with a body kit on it. I’m sure real car fans would gravitate more towards the Audi R8, or maybe a Ferrari 599 or California. Maybe even the new beautiful 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni.
But for $300k this Mercedes-Benz doesn’t add up as a super car worth the mustard in my book.
Maybe the owner who put this car up on auto trader feels the same way.
Thanks to rSportscars.com and AutoTrader.com for the pix

I agree. Why spend that much money on “boy racer” looks. The motor turns it into a bit of a sleeper, which is cool, but it cost way too much imo for what it is and how it will be seen 99 out of 100 times.
Alright… put me down for this one. Why would I spend the money on this thing when I can get the same thing AND the show? Maybe I’m just too flashy, but like you said… if you have to explain it then you missed your mark… and it only cost you $300,000! lol
