Tanner Foust Drifts his Scion TC?! (Video)

Tanner-Scion-Drift-Car-6Happy Monday everyone! Time to get back to work, and what do we do at work? Read about cars, think about cars, watch youtube movies about cars… I think you get the drift. Speaking about drifting, check out this youtube movie I saw last week, its really tripping me out.

We all know Tanner Foust is the man when it comes to drifting. His skills are amazing. He’s won the 2007 and 2008 Formula D championship and was a stunt driver in part of the greatest car movie franchise of all time The Fast and the Furious. The drifting in F&F Tokyo Drift, yeah, that was him. Now he’s made another movie of sorts and it has me scratching my head.

The video is of Tanner Foust drifting a heavily modified Scion TC up the legendary stretch of Mulholland Highway known as “The Snake” in California. Yes, its super cool that they closed that road for him to drift on and its amazing to watch his skills behind the wheel. The tail of the Scion slipping out at ridiculous angles, fifty feet of smoke trailing the car, all the things we love to see when we watch drifting.

My problem is not with the driver or with the drifting – its with the car. I mean a Scion? Aren’t all Scions front wheel drive? Don’t all TCs have Four cylinders, putting down about 120 HP? I know, yes, drift cars are heavily modified, some to a huge extent. For example, Team Orange’s EVO X. Check out the motor turned 90 degrees.

But seriously, Tanner’s Formula D Drift car prepared by AEM is Redonkulous.

A rear wheel drive Scion TC with a NASCAR TRD Sprint Cup motor making 650 HP with 450 LB of torque all through a manual 4 speed tranny!?

There is no Scion that any of us can buy that is anything like this.

My thing is, I think Tanner rocks as a driver and I love drifting but this video leaves me feeling cheated. As a car fan, knowing that no stock Scion in the world could ever dream of doing this is off putting. I mean, if it was Tanner’s old 350z we’d go, “Wow that’s cool! With some mods I could go drifting just like the guys on TV.” But with a Scion you just pulled off the lot its not happening. Even with a Scion that is otherwise heavily modified, its still not happening.

With the US form of drifting in the D1 and Formula D series there is some semblance of real cars under all the loud paint and smoke. If it’s a Nissan 240 SX then we know it’s a rear drive car. If it’s a Mustang or a Viper, we know it’s a rear drive car. But to see a car, the Scion TC, that is well known as a low budget, front wheel drive sports car with Toyota Camry parts drifting around the mountains of California at 90 miles an hour, its outlandish at best.

What do you guys think? Cool or ridiculous?
