Last night I saw the strangest thing. I was getting on to the highway after work, and as I’m merging onto I95 south in Miami, I check my mirror and see a little car whiz by.
I’m thinking, “What the hell was that?!” Then zoom another car goes by. In 1/10th of a second I put it all together, but my brain was still going– what in the world did I just see?!
The first car I saw was a blue Smart (Smart Passion Coupe) flying down the highway weaving in and out of traffic at 90 to 100 MPH. The second car in this little race was (I shit you not) a black Bentley Continental Flying Spur Sedan.
Now, on a drag strip this would be no contest. The Bentley has a 552 horsepower V12 engine with a top speed of 197 MPH. Oh, and the base price for a 2009 Bentley Continental Flying Spur – $170,990. The Smart makes 70 HP with it’s whopping 1.0 Liter 3 cylinder engine. Base price $13,990. I must say, it does have quite sporty paddle shifters to get you up and down all 5 speeds in a hurry.
I’d venture to guess that the engine of the Bentley weighes as much as the entire smart car (cart?). But in the middle of light traffic the advantage goes to the dainty and nimble Smart. Maybe it’s the ultimate tuner car? Check out what Brabus the euro car tuner did with their Smart. Very very sexy… Wait… sexy Smart? Hmmm… I’m a sucker for orange. I love how this Smart looks.
Get this, you can buy this car not in orange or with the gangster rim’s but still Brabus right from the Smart web site.
The Smart can weave in and out of traffic better than any car. Its motorcycle-esque in its ability to get through tiny breaks in the flow of cars. Alternatively, the Bentley, although powerful, has its girth to deal with when navigating the high ways. The preverbal compact running back vs. the brawny line backer. Each has their strong suit.
As the two cars flew off into the night the Smart was way ahead.
Now I don’t know why these two were racing down the highway at 8:30 pm? Racing on public roads is dumb anyway. It was interesting to see. What do you guys think? Is the Bentley or the Smart better for spirited driving?

Smart cars handle better than I expected. If someone can weave in and out Traffic at Speed. Is there a SmartCar Racing leauge yet?
I would imagine that there good handling with the weight so low.
lol a smart car racing league is a gr8 idea! they could have em in target parking lots like go carts.
too funny!
[...] while back I wrote a post about where I saw a Bentley and a Smart racing down I 95, two very quick blurs in the setting sun, it was hard to believe. But as these two sit side by side [...]
