A few days ago I had the pleasure of shooting Dave’s 1998 Spa Yellow Pearl Acura NSX-T in downtown Tampa, Florida. I met Dave through the popular online message board, FerrariChat, and we scheduled a shoot on Monday evening, August 16th, 2010. It was a great shoot, and I had a ton of fun. It was awesome to get to meet Dave in person and hang for a few hours while doing what I love to do.Dave has owned this car for about 7 years. I was truly grateful that he took it out despite the sprinkles from clouds above our heads. I’m not too familiar with the Tampa area, so when Dave and I met at the University of Tampa we discussed a few possible locations and got to it. The shots from underground were just that, underground. We pulled down a four lane tunnel right underneath the St. Pete Times Forum and just kicked the car sideways in the middle of the road. I didn’t care; if people drove by, we just flagged them around. One lady even stopped to ask us for directions, and she wanted her Toyota Camry in the shot too! Sorry lady… exotics only!
There was a small parking garage in the tunnel under ground and the pay stations weren’t being manned by anyone, so I though it would be kind of cool to back the car in between two of the booths. I don’t know why it came to mind, but that’s the beauty of being a photographer. Creating an image in my head and making it a reality. I think it turned out pretty well. Lined up along the walls were a bunch of traffic cones and some signs. I grabbed a few and lined them up around the car, creating a site not normally seen. Once again, letting the imagination run wild.
After we spent some time under the big buildings of downtown Tampa we headed back up, and the rain seemed to have stopped for a while. It was nice and quiet downtown so we pulled off and got some shots with the water behind us. The evening glow from the setting sun was perfect for shooting the yellow NSX-T. The “T” in NSX-T stands for Targa. At any given time Dave is able to take the hardtop off his car and let the wind run through his hair. Pretty cool if you ask me.
The last location brought us to Davis Island. Dave found a great spot to put the car. The sun was just about down, and the sail boats in the background added some awesome visuals with ambient light that was to die for. There’s an airstrip just out of sight to the right of the photo that we’re planning on going back to and shooting the car again sometime.
I have to say, it was pretty fun chasing Dave and his Japanese sports car throughout downtown Tampa. Trying to keep up was a little difficult, especially since I don’t know the area at all. At one point I slid my car through a yellow light in a sweeping left hand turn just so I wouldn’t lose him. What can I say… The roads were wet, and I may have given it a little too much gas. My bad…
I’d like to give a special thanks to my new friend Dave. I had an awesome time with you and it truly was a pleasure to work with you and your beautiful ride. I hope you all enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them. For the full high-resolution gallery please visit my flickr page: Dave’s Acura NST-X.
