My Trip to the New Porsche Panamera Launch Party

my-daily-drive-.com-panamera-event-10-21-09-025Every year in car land there are things you can count on, for owners its oil changes, gallons (and gallons) of gas purchased then burned, and for most, car payments. For car makers there are other constants. Every year a new model has to come out. Be it an update of last years with a light freshen up and sometimes a brand spanking new model.

For Porsche this year it is the latter, a brand spanking new car. One that has had the interweb all a twitter for years now. The famed and fabled Panamera. For some [Porsha hq in Germany] this is the evolution of Porsche, Power luxury even a bit of practicality in a brand known for all out performance at “almost” any cost.

For others though this car is the answer to the question that nobody asked. A “Four Door Sports Car.” Seriously? That’s about as practical as a 550 HP SUV … oh wait, Porsche makes one of those too (The very sexy Cayenne Turbo S). I’ll get on to my opinions about the Panemara later, but for now it’s about that last bit of glits and glamour that a company’s new car has.

A KICK ASS PARTY!

And yes, ladies and gentleman, that is what Porsche had lined up for the launch of their brand spanking new car this past October. The place “ The Collection” an exclusive exotic car retailer selling only Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Lotus, Porsche, and Audi located on the corner of Bird Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard in swanky Coral Gables Florida.

Oh yeah, and I was there (don’t hate). Open bar? Check, delicious. Ridiculously exotic delectable culinary delights courtesy of the Fountaine Blue Hotel on South Beach? Check, delicious. One bite Sweet dessert confections dished up on platters for prospective customers to snack on while eyeing this newest of German exotic cars? Check, delicious. One off custom Porsche Logo cake? Check, but I didn’t have any. I bet people didn’t know it was edible it looked so good.

After a few obligatory words from the head people in charge at Porcha & The Collection it was time to see the car! The lovely ladies who always seem to accompany events like this pulled the satin sheets back to reveal … AN ENMORUS CAR! Wow this thing is huge!

The Coral Gables movers and shakers who were in attendance seemed to have been placed into a genuine trance! They loved the car. They couldn’t get enough they wanted to touch the car, see the car, smell the car, see how it felt on their butts.

They proceeded to jump in every seat. Press every button. All under the watchful eye of the Collection’s ever so patient staff.

Me, I’d be freaking out if that many people were all up in my white leather interior $90k+ car. But hey, it’s not my car! I sat in it, too.

my-daily-drive-.com-panamera-event-10-21-09-031

The front is roomy yet snug – however roomy snug can be. The back is very comfortable. I could see going for a long ride in the back of this car. Hey, spring break road trip … oh wait, this is for grownups :(

As the event went on j2 and I walked around, the jazz band played in front of the DJ with the custom Panamera DJ booth.

The models did their part by standing around looking good hungry.

my-daily-drive-.com-panamera-event-10-21-09-021

One of the Panameras had the exclusive Porsche luggage package in the back. Four suitcases and hey, the carry on is free! Oh wait, no its not- that suitcase set is $3500.00!

Around the Collection they had a plethora of Panameras. White, black, blue, brown. You’d think Porsche HQ was in Miami. If I had to pick one I’d say the white is the most glamourous. It has a certain austere look that masks its mass and enhances its elegance.

The Panamera model range includes the Panamera S, Panamera 4S and the Panamera Turbo. The MSRP for the Panamera S is $89,800; the Panamera 4S is $93,800 and Panamera Turbo is $132,600. The S and 4S  models include the 400-horsepower V8 engine which offers an EPA estimated 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, while the 500 horsepower Panamera Turbo’s V8 twin turbo engine offers 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. Both of these ratings are best-in-class. Additionally, the 500-horsepower Panamera Turbo accelerates to 60 mph in just 4 seconds with a top test track speed of 188 mph. Mmm fast four door.

my-daily-drive-.com-panamera-event-10-21-09-025

I think the car is borderline silly looking. I’m on the forgiving side of the spectrum. J2 giving the woman’s perspective on the other hand, thinks the new Porsche Panamera “station wagon” is down right ugly. Its big, its fat, it kind of looks like a Porsche if they made a cockroach looking station wagon.

my-daily-drive-.com-panamera-event-10-21-09-027

I say it’s a fast station wagon. But it’s not attractive to me. Interesting, yes, but who exactly is looking for a 4 door 4 seat super station wagon? Even Dodge couldn’t sell its recently discontinued super station wagon Magnum SRT-8. The car had 425 HP which is more then the lower end Panemara and the car was a quarter of the price. Me, I’d buy a 911 for show and go and a smaller inexpensive suv or truck for hauling. Two purposes built good cars for the price of one all you can eat buffet Panemara.

The car to sit in though is a dream, the cockpit so focused. And for those of us who like to press buttons the car has what seems like the space shuttle’s equivalent number of buttons switches and levers. Enough to keep you thoroughly distracted from the task at hand. Which is driving- no. The task at hand is looking good in your brand new Porsche Panemara.

  1. Nice write up! It was a great event! The pictures are really nice as well! :)

  2. very cool shots!! i first read about the Panamera in a C&D magazine a couple months back, thought it was for 2011 for some reason… they kinda look like a Porsche body stretched to fit a bigger (station-wagon-esque) chasis… either way, so jealous you go to to go to that! :D LoL

  3. lol thanks man yeah its an interesting car. Grate fit, nice inside, good motors but the look ehh to wagon for me.
    The party was fresh tho!
Glad you liked the write up!

  4. Great blog on a not so great car/suv/crossover thing. Saw pics of this at “The Quail” concourse, I think, and thought Porsche should stick with 2 doors. Still do…and by the way- next time, eat a piece of cake for me =)

  5. lol thanks Ron. Man I bet that cake is still there lol.
I too think Porsche should stick to fast 2 doors. I mean why not a launch party for the new gt3? Hmm … I should find out if they are doing one.
