After ooogling Alex Roy’s car, having quick flashes of his book, and imagining racing down a highway in the middle of the US in the middle of the night with no headlights on at 145 mph I snapped back to reality.
I realized that there were cars all around me going that fast. There were cars that are capable of going even faster just feet from me. Behind us as we were checking out the Polizei 144 M5 the Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR that had been behind the wall getting worked on pulled out of its spot and motored down to the split behind the wall to get back into pit lane and eventually back on to the track.
It’s crazy how we, along with hundreds of other bystanders, are all just hanging out while the sweat and toil that is motor car racing is going on right next to us. I mean, its like if you were in the locker room of the Dolphins during half time just moseying around checking things out.
It was a beautiful day and the breeze was a needed touch cause man, it was hot!
As we continued to walk down the pits we came upon a big commotion. I looked over to see who was there. Was it Dario? Tony? Danica? No it was Marco. Marco Andretti actually.
One of the most storied last names in all of motor sports and not a shabby driver himself was now but feet from me. He was actually shorter than I thought he would be. But nonetheless it was cool to see him. I earlier had been kicking myself bringing my big ass flash that goes on my camera, thinking, ”man, it’s a bright sunny day- what are you going to need the flash for?!”
Well obviously I needed it to take pix of Marco Andretti, duh! He was in the shade but my trusty photo instincts paid off to get you guys this cool shot of Marco signing autographs.
Just as I’m thinking this is real cool I catch a glimpse of a car just behind me. I whip around and see Danica Patrick’s orange and black carbon fiber 220 MPH racecar being pushed into it’s pit stall from the hauler truck. The crowd was so packed in they had to be pushed out of the way so the crew could get the car in the stall.
How crazy is that! I got the pix! You get to see them- what a world!
More pix tomorrow, and don’t worry, I’ve got some video too!
