Homestead-Miami Speedway for the Indy 300 Part 1

My-daily-drive-.com-HMS-09-4After making some calls, some emails, and some more calls we were finally able to procure some tickets to the big race. (Thanks Jay!) J2, Peter, and myself were on our way down to Homestead. Well, after a quick stop at CVS to purchase some earplugs, we were on our way to Homestead.

Driving down to Homestead-Miami Speedway on the Turnpike we saw a bunch of traffic, it was a good sign the races and the day’s events were gonna rock. Nothing better then a packed house. Our aim was to arrive in time to see the grand am cars race on the road course, then grub at the championship BBQ, and finally hunker down for 300 miles of wheel to wheel nose to tail 200 + MPH action with the Indy car championship race on the mile and a half tri-oval.

It didn’t exactly go down like that, but it was still cool. After arriving and parking we walked to the track. If you have not been to a car race you’re missing out. Your local track or even super speedway hours from where you live is a sight to see. And as for Homestead Miami Speedway, the track itself is magnificent. An awe-inspiring structure dedicated to the pursuit of speed. You definitely get a feeling for size and scope of things to come as you walk up.

After arriving we caught the tram to the paddock area. For those who aren’t in the know it’s the “backstage” so to speak of the racing world. It’s where the teams set up and work on their cars. Amazingly its open to the public (for a price) and you can walk around just about everywhere short of the direct area where the teams are tuning and fixing up their rides. And let me tell you lots of people were taking advantage of this.

As the grand am cars lapped the track just out of sight, but not out of earshot, we got to see some of the fascinating inner workings of the Indy car teams and their amazing cars. I also got some terrific pix of the IRL championship race that I’ll have for you on mydailydrive so stay tuned.

I have some video as well that I’ll share this week.

Its way too much to post in one day so keep coming back and I’ll have more and more photos and video to show to all of you.

My-daily-drive-.com-HMS-09-5A quick teaser, one of the first cars that caught our eye was the infamous Team Polizei 144 BMW M5  driven by Alex Roy and his team across the country. In case you didn’t know- Alex Roy is an American rally race driver who has won the spirit of Gumball trophy numerous times and in 2006 set the transcontinental driving record across the United States in 32 hours and 7 min.

You can read more about Alex Roy’s escapades and his quest to break the transcontinental driving record in his fantastic book THE DRIVER. I highly recommended it to any car fan… and yes it has pictures!

Roy has a pro (legal) team in the grand am series, which is why his gumball car was at the track.

Still very cool and after you read the book you’ll see why we were all amazed to see the car.

More tomorrow!
