With half a cup of coffee down my brain is starting to get into gear. All the random ideas that were floating around in my head now have direction. You could say the pace car has pulled off and we are about to go back to green flag blogging.
What I’ve been thing about for the past 48 hours has been … you guessed it the Daytona 500. Or what some have been calling the Pothole 500 (#pothole500). What a race. It started with such promise. The crashes happened, the favorites led; everything was on track to be a good day of hard racing at the super speedway. But I, like the rest of you, never expected this southern bell to show up…
Yes little miss pothole showed up to put a halt to things. This guest appearance of talking track had me and my compadres thinking “for real a pot hole (said with southern twang)” – in the middle of the Daytona motor speedway? What is going on here!?
Now I didn’t know all the history of the track but after the first 70 min caution I had learned a lot. And what got me shaking my head (SMH) was the fact that the racetrack has not been repaved since 1976.
That’s since before some of the drivers were even born! That’s an old ass track what’s going on?? I know some of the drivers like the bumps and imperfections in the track because they think it adds “personality” but I think its silly. You see the cars bouncing up and down and the drivers can barely hold on.
How can the track owners get away with not repaving a track? And then for this to happen- one of the biggest embarrassments I’ve ever seen in motor sports. The track literally falling apart during the race. This makes me think…
It’s time to repave the track guys.
I mean you wouldn’t see this in F1 or Indy car. It would be too dangerous.
In Miami the road crews are out every (day and) night repaving the streets and highways. I wish they could have gone up to Daytona and fixed that whole faster than the guys who they had. Boy that took forever.
One of the drivers said “just put a cone in it we wont hit it- we’re professional racecar drivers!” I like that option. Let’s make it interesting. Word is the second fix it solution was to get bondo from all the teams and fill the pothole with it. It worked- looked odd- but it worked.
Well, I hope the blogosphere and push from fans and other media outlets gets the Daytona guys up off their asses and into a big ol’ asphalt repaving machine and smooth out that track. It would lead to faster speeds, better racing and less red flags!
But, I would miss the sweet sound of our fave talking pothole
“I’m just a pot hole …. K bye!”

Haha great write up Jesse. I love the Pothole 500 logo. One of the drivers said that Daytona is like a dirt track and it’s fun sliding the cars around, and if they pave it the track will have too much grip and not be fun. I don’t care what they do as long as we don’t have any more two hour construction delays…..

lol K, Bye!
