Fast and Furious DVD vs. Blue Ray

fast-and-furious-poster-1The newest Fast and Furious movie interestingly titled “Fast and Furious” is amazing. Truly a car action orgy of loud engines, oiled up plot lines, sexy girls, buff guys, and incredibly believable high octane stunts. But, if you’re reading this blog, you know that already. You’ve seen the movie and have been waiting with bated breath for the DVD to come out with all its awesome “Special Features.” Cause at heart all car guys are movie buffs, don’t lie, you know you love movies.

With Universal studio’s intense advertising campaign on all the guy channels (Speed, Spike, History, HGTV … wait, err, maybe that last one is just me) every one knows that the movie came out on DVD this past Tuesday. In all the advertisements they boast about the limited edition and all the special features. As a movie buff I thought to myself, “Self, I can’t wait to get this DVD to see all the features!” The making of, the behind the scenes interviews, all that good stuff.

I, of course, was at the local Best Buy on Tuesday to get the movie. I pull into the parking lot which strangely looked like a tuner car show, and mosey on past the kid selling chocolates. I don’t even know which charity he’s selling the chocolates for. I see the display table in the front of the store. There it is: FAST AND FURIOUS DVD! The one with the cool red boarder. I pick it up and on the back the bonus features say:

- Feature commentary with director Justin Lin
- Gag reel

That’s it…THATS IT???? WTF MAN!

photo(37)I’m very confused cause the TV commercial said that the disc had tons of bonus features. At this point I’m going from confused to perturbed with sprinkle of angry! I grab the Blue Ray and ta-da I see whats missing!! Hater-ass Universal Studios put all the cool features on the Blue Ray disc not the DVD!!

I don’t have a Blue Ray player!! Who the hell has a Blue Ray player?!?!??!? Argh!! So now my dilemma, buy the “limited edition” Blue Ray version that I can’t watch but has all the cool features that I want to see, but then I have to buy a Blue Ray player or Play Station 3. My other option is to get the weak-ass DVD version and just suck it up! Thus putting my dreams of awesome special features on hold it till I get a Blue Ray player.

I’m in the store mad with a furrowed brow holding the two discs doing a cost benefit analysis on a damn movie… a movie I’ve already scene!! I’m in a state of disbelief that they wouldn’t have the same features on the DVD version as they do on the Blue Ray. I haven’t thought this hard about anything since deciding to switch up to an iPhone, and that’s serious stuff! Shopping for me is in and out bam like a surgical strike! Now I have to decide what to do in the field, bogged down in the quagmire of trench warfare with my fellow fast and furious fans also deciding which disc to buy! The Best Buy staffer was just staring at me wondering if I need help. Shoot he’s probably wondering if I can read the way I’m examining at the two discs so hard.

I look to a higher power to guide me,

WWVDD.

What Would Vin Diesel Do?

He would suck it up, take the weak-ass DVD with the crappy features, and enjoy the movie. So that’s what I did. Now I’m plotting on when to get a Play Station 3 so I can get the Blue Ray with those dastardly, yet so enticing special features! Plus, I will eventually need a PS3 so I can play the new Need for Speed game (Need for Speed Shift) that comes out only for PS3 in September!

Does any one out there have Blue Ray? If so please let me know what’s the big deal… is it that much better?

So that’s my story, I’m salty that the Fast and Furious franchise is forcing my hand into the glowing Blue Ray future, but, what can ya do.

So DVD in hand I walk out of the store, give the kid selling chocolate a buck for some chocolate and drive home. That’s what Vin Diesel would have done!

Edit: I have just learned that there is a DVD version that has most, but not all, the special features. Either way Best Buy didn’t carry that one… they’re haters!
