Classic car’s are cool and fun. Sometimes they are rolling History Channel specials filled with controversy and intrigue. The owners will gladly go on, and on, and on, and on about how uber unique and special their car just is.
For others a classic car is just that- an old car. Simply a mode of transportation to get to and from work. To the store and occasionally a leisure activity or two. Its hard to tell where this VW Bug owner stands. Not sure if this was just the cheapest hippest car he (or she) could get their hands on at the time. Or maybe this car has been in the family since the 50′s.
I do know that this is one of the most iconic automobiles ever made. The Käfer , the German word for “beetle,” was originally comissioned by Adolf Hitler himself in 1933. He gave the order to Ferdinand Porsche (yes, that Porsche) to develop a “Volks-Wagen.” The name means “people’s car” in German, in which it is pronounced [ˈfolksvɑːgən]). He required a basic vehicle capable of transporting two adults and three children at 100 km/h (62 mph). The “People’s Car” would be available to citizens of the Third Reich through a savings scheme at 990 Reichsmark, about the price of a small motorcycle (an average income being around 32RM a week).
That is but the start of the storied history of this very car. Does this driver care? Or is he just late to work? We will never know. What I do know is this car was driving around Miami on a sunny afternoon, with all its history kept neatly inside.
