Not to long ago you could get your sports car in only two varieties. You could have either the spyder aka soft top convertible, or the hard top coupe. The convertible was for the masses who want the sun shining in on them. They want the accolades, the thumbs up’s, the tanning while driving and all that good stuff.
On the flip side there are the true car fans! They want to be protected by the hard top of their sports car. They want the aerodynamics, chassis stiffness, and overall better composure and safety that a hard top sports car provides. When BMW came out with its last gen Z4 you had to choose. This driver chose the less popular option of the hard top. I find that the hard top has a better line and is a very attractive car, much more desirable to me than the rag top convertible.
Now the new Z4 is a hard top convertible. The best of both worlds, which is the new trend. Cars like the Ferrari California, the BMW 335i, and the 2010 Lexus IS 250 C are all showing the trend that you can have your cake and eat it, too. Hard top and convertible for you! The bonus is how awesomely cool it looks when they “Transform” from a dark racing cockpit to a brighter than all out doors sun machine! I hope the trend continues to even more cars and eventually fades out the rag top all together.
Oh, and yes, thats an Audi R8 in the background. More on that later.
